Kolkata : Heritage Institute of Technology proudly announces that its student team "Code Nirvana" has emerged as the Joint National Winner of the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2025 - Hardware Edition, held at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, on 12th December 2025.
The winning project was developed for Problem Statement SIH25057, issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution (Department of Consumer Affairs). The challenge focused on automating compliance checks of Legal Metrology declarations on e-commerce platforms, with the objective of safeguarding consumer rights and promoting fair trade practices.
Team Code Nirvana (Idea ID: 118301, Team ID: 64229) is led by Srinjoy Roy (IT, 3rd Year) and mentored by Prof. Rituparna Sinha. The team comprises:
Together, the team developed an innovative AI-powered hardware solution that automatically scans, verifies, and flags non-compliance in product packaging and online listings.
Their system integrates a smart hardware device equipped with a high-resolution camera, embedded artificial intelligence, and OCR technology to extract critical product label information such as MRP, net quantity, manufacturer details, and country of origin. A built-in rule engine cross-checks this data against Legal Metrology norms in real time and generates instant compliance alerts through a centralized dashboard designed for regulatory authorities.
This breakthrough solution significantly reduces manual inspection efforts, enhances regulatory enforcement efficiency, and brings greater transparency and accountability to digital marketplaces.
Smart India Hackathon 2025 witnessed record participation, with over 72,000 idea submissions from nearly 69,000 teams across the country. From this vast pool, only 1,360 teams qualified for the Grand Finale across software and hardware tracks, making this national victory a rare and prestigious achievement.
Adding to this milestone, Heritage Institute of Technology was also recently declared the National Winner in the Smart India Hackathon 2025 - Software Edition, where Team Waterloo delivered an exceptional solution at the national finals hosted by IIM Lucknow.
Shri Pradip Agarwal, CEO, Heritage Group of Institutions, said:
